Buckin' Hay

Call me a natural blond....I started a blog site then instead of posting in it, I then proceeded to create a blog writeup which I just realized is a whole other site. I'm gonna blame it on the weather.

It has been raining for 5 days now, the hay shed is leaking profusely, and I desparately need hay.

Besides that, there are puddles and little rivers everywhere and it's ruining my fuzzy slippers! Yes, I live in my slippers.

Back to the hay, it's a good thing I don't have much (I have about 10 bales left) in the hay shed getting mouldy--which then means: Money down the drain, the horses won't eat it and if they do it'll make them sick, AND I have to "deal" with it. Tearing it off is a pain in the butt--besides, it's hard to see in the dark. Yadda, Yadda, Yadda! Do you hear a negative attitude?

So I've been on the phone rounding up hay. A month ago I told my husband we needed hay and he said he'd handle it. Here I am....Making the calls.

***sigh***

My neighbor found 80 lb bales for $6. Hmmmm....hope I haven't lost my muscles (flexing to check). I have a call in for help from a friend's son. He's a STRAPPIN' young man who is soooo polite, friendly, and very hard-working (EXTREMELY HARD TO FIND THESE DAYS). Not to mention absolutely adorable.

The kicker of these 80 lb bales is ....I have to go get them! Usually people deliver their hay to their customers--not these people. We sold our 5-horse trailer to our friends--but it's filled with hay at the moment. My 2-horse trailer (the largest of our 3 trailers) will take many trips back and forth. And Jake was just here with his flatbed borrowing our tractor yesterday on his day off (he lives an hour away) DANG! What to do?

hmmmmm...(phone rings)

  • Sunny: Hello?

  • Neighbor: Hi! Whatch ya doin'?

  • Sunny: Well, I need to pick up 180 bales of hay and I need a flatbed. Do you have one?

  • Neighbor: Yep! My husband just bought it! When do you need it?

YES! Talk about perfect timing! Can you believe that call came in while writing this?!

Now, I need my boy to pull thru and help me! My neighbor joked about the bales weighing more than me and laughed--AT ME. I'll just take that as a compliment, thank you. I've bucked hay many times and I think I can hold my own. ok well...maybe not, but I can talk the BIG TALK! The part that will BITE is loading it up, then unloading it and piling it into the hay shed. Oh it's easy to throw or roll it off the flatbed--it's the LIFTING and STACKING that's the tough part! (That's where the young buck comes in handy.)

Hmmm.....I'm thinking this is a GREAT excuse for a massage! ooooohhhhh, i can feel the aching muscles already!

Well, the power just went out and I'm running on batteries. It's thundering, lightning, hailing, and whatever else it's capable of doing! Better just post this, add more logs to the fire, and make sure this little 3 lb puppy that I'm "babysitting" isn't leaving presents (I can see tiny bits of newspaper & pinecone pieces everywhere)! Besides, he's irritating the cat--

Whatever you do, DON'T IRRITATE THE CAT!!!!

Happy Trails!
